The house was built in 1778-81 for Thomas Harley, son of the 3rd Earl of Oxford, who had made a fortune supplying the British Army in the American War of Independence. He commissioned Henry Holland to design the house and in turn Holland's father-in-law, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown was commissioned to advise on the estate (c1778). The park today is a notably complete example of his work. Brown's irregular lake was planned, when viewed from the house, to resemble a loop in a river. Most of the park is grassland with very mature trees. The old kitchen garden has a collection of historic Herefordshire apple varieties.
