The 20 acres of gardens hare are planted as parkland with a large herb garden and borders nearer to the Medieval House. There is a lake, pond, and streams and the River Wye borders the grounds. There are two long avenues of trees: one was planted in the mid-1600's to commemorate the then-owner of the House being made an MP. It consists of Yews and Pines and is nearly a mile long. The house and this Walk appear many times in the Rev Francis Kilvert's famous diary of the Victorian period. The other tree-lined walk of alternate Red Oaks and Silver Poplars leads to the River Wye, and was planted in celebration of the film-maker, John Bulmer's marriage to Angela Conner Bulmer. Angela Conner is the well-known modern sculptor. Her wind, water, and sun mobiles, and four groups of bronze portraits: members of the Royal family; of well known artists; politicians; and finally a circle of friends; are all to be found in the gardens. There is also an ancient cider press in working order and a collection or rare poultry and water birds. For more information please contact Monnington Court. |
